Join Head Gardener Åsa Gregers-Warg to learn how to create a sustainable, wildlife and eco-friendly Beth Chatto-style border for shade.
Rather than looking at shade as a problem, embrace it and see it as an opportunity to make a wonderful tapestry of foliage; creating a symphony of green, interspersed with splashes of white or gold, where a multitude of textures, shapes and forms will provide ongoing interest through the seasons. Even in the smallest of spaces its possible to create simple yet striking combinations by combining bold foliage with more delicate, fine-textured ferns, grasses and perennials. To ensure your plants will not only survive, but truly thrive, its essential to select plants according to the prevailing aspect, soil type and climate . Beth's mantra, right plant, right place has never been more relevant as our gardens face the challenges created by climate change. This course will focus on how to select the best plants for shade, incl. dry shade, and arrange them Beth Chatto-style.
The day will start with an introduction to shade-loving plants. Åsa will share tips on soil preparation and how to select the best ferns, perennials and ornamental grasses for your garden. You'll learn how to arrange the plants Beth Chatto-style and how to maintain the border throughout the year. A tour of the Woodland Garden is included.
